Sumiton Christian to return to state, three other teams vying for bids

The Sumiton Christian Eagles are heading back to the state tournament, a common postseason stop for the program after missing last year, while the Jasper Vikings, Curry Yellow Jackets, and Cordova Blue Devils remain in contention to bids.

Class 2A Sumiton Christian beat Lexington 11-1 in the Runner-up bracket final on Thursday after the game had been rescheduled due to weather on Wednesday. The Eagles won four state championships in the period between 2009 and 2019, before missing the 2020 due to COVID cancellation and being eliminated in the regional last year.

The Curry Yellow Jackets were down 3-0 in the top of the fifth inning against Priceville, then held a 13-1 scoring edge for the remainder of the game to advance to the Class 4A Regional Title game on Friday against #6 Brooks at 9 AM Friday.

The Jasper Vikings fell after an eight inning battle with #1 Springville, 4-3, but take on powerhouse Hayden in the Class 5A Runner-up bracket at 9 a.m. Friday.

In Albertville, the Cordova Blue Devils lost their opener against Madison County, but shutout Jacksonville in the first round of the Class 4A East Regional Runner-up Bracket to advance to face North Jackson at 9 a.m.


Softball Regionals Wrap-up 5-11-23

Class 5A

Jasper 7, Lawrence Co 2 (1st Round)
Missy Odom pitched seven innings for the win, giving up four hits with two earned runs and four walks, while striking out 13 batters. At the plate, Idaysia Mercer went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, De Caleigh Calvin was 2 for 3 with a run scored, Odom went 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Mary Hall hit a one-run double with a run scored.

Springville 4, Jasper 3 (8 innings) (2nd Round)
Odom pitched seven innings in the loss, giving up six hits and an earned run, with five walks and four strikeouts. Offensively, Isabella Brown went 2 for 4, Makenzie Abrams and Emma Franks both had a hit with a run scored.

Class 4A

Florence

Curry 2, Rogers 1 (1st Round)
Alena Howse pitched four and two thirds innings, giving up two hits and an earned run with two strikeouts. Skiely Perry pitched two and one-third innings with six strikeouts. At the plate, Jenna Madison went 2 for 2, Ivee Kelley was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Shileigh Williams hit a solo homerun.

Curry 13, Priceville 4
Perry pitched six innings, giving up two hits and two eaned runs and four walks, with 10 strikeouts. Ella Wright pitched an inning giving up a hit and a walk. At the plate, Williams went 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored, Kelley was 2 for 4 with two runs scored and an RBI, Jenna Madison went 2 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, Kaydence Hutchinson was 2 for 5 with two RBIs, Lanie West went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Ansley Brown was 2 foir 6 with a run scored.

 

Albertville

Madison Co. 11, Cordova 1 (1st Round)
Cassie Bailey pitched three and two-thirds innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs, with a walk and a strikeout. Camden Johnson pitched two innings, giving up seven hits, five earned runs and three walks with a strikeout. At the plate, Lillie McGuff went 2 for 2 and Shyla Armistad scored a run

Cordova 5, Jacksonville 0 (Runner-up 1st Round)
Johnson pitched seven innings in the shutout win, giving up two hits, a walk and striking out five batters. Offensively, Armistad went 3 for 3 with a double and a run scored, Johnson was 2 for 3 with a double and a run scored, Ella Madison hit a two-run homerun with a run scored and McGuff had a triple with a run scored.

Class 2A

Sumiton Christian 11, Lexington 1 (Runner-up final)
The Eagles earned their playoff spot in the runner-up qualifying final, with Kalista Cornelison getting the six-inning win, giving up five hits and an earned run with seven strikeouts. At the plate, Alison Kelly went 3 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored, Bailey Phillips was 2 for 3 with a homerun and four RBIs, Crystal Corley went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored, Maddie McCrary was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs scored and Cornelison went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.
