Three area titles won on Thursday, five team qualify for regionals

Three Wal-Win volleyball programs — the Jasper Vikings, Dora Bulldogs and Carbon Hill Bulldogs — won area championships and top seeding for next week’s region tournaments, while two additional teams — the Curry Yellow Jackets and Meek Tigers — finished as their area’s runner-up and earned a qualifying bid.

Jasper defeated Minor 3-0 for the Class 6A, Area 10 title at Carl Cannon Coliseum to clinch the seventh area championship for head coach Bobby Daniels.

Carbon Hill beat Tarrant 3-0 in the Class 3A, Area 10 tournament opener, then bested Winfield 3-0 in the championship final.

Curry topped Hanceville 3-0 in the Class 4A, Area 11 tournament, but fell to eventual champion Good Hope 3-1 to secure a runner-up position.

Meek lost to Marion County in the Class 1A, Area 12 championship final, but advances to the regional as the runner-up.

All four teams join Sumiton Christian and Addison as they travel to Huntsville next week for the North Regional at the Von Braun Center.

Dora beat Indian Springs 3-0 in the championship final and will head to Montgomery’s Cramton Bowl Multiplex for the South Regional next week.

Both regional tournaments will begin with Class 2A, 3A and 6A play on Wednesday and conclude on Friday.
