The Bevill State Bears overcame both the adversity of a depleted roster and a formidable opponent in the Tennessee Valley Academy Defenders in a 94-89 victory, breaking a four-game losing streak on Monday night.
Maurice Johnson, who was tended to for an injury and had to sit out a large portion of the first half, scored 26 points and recorded five rebounds to lead the Bears and earn Pinnacle Bank/WJLX 101.5 Player of the Game honors. C.J. Beckham recorded a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds with two blocks, while Carterius Evans had 13 points and seven rebounds.
With Tennessee Valley leading most of the first half, Bevill State broke away in the final minute to take a three-point edge, 37-34, at halftime.
The Bears never trailed in the second half, coming up with key defensive plays in the last minute of regulation to win, 94-89.
