Jasper, AL – Jasper City Councilman and community leader Josh Gates has announced his candidacy for Mayor of Jasper, Alabama. Currently serving as the Council Member for District 3, Gates brings a strong record of leadership, a deep commitment to public service, and a passion for continuing Jasper’s forward momentum.
“Jasper has made incredible progress over the past decade. I believe it is critical that we continue building on the momentum that has brought us this far,” said Gates. “I am eager to bring together the tremendous resources of our community to create a future that is smart, sustainable, and unified.”
Gates served in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Ranger with the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment before continuing his service overseas as a Private Military Contractor in Iraq. After returning to Alabama, he completed his degree at the University of South Alabama and went on to co-found the digital media company Saturday Down South. As CEO, he helped build and manage a successful portfolio of digital brands, which was sold in 2021.
Today, he continues to invest in and advise startups, including two current projects in the energy sector.
Gates lives in Jasper with his wife, Dr. Talia Gates, a local physician. They have two sons, Kye and Zane, and are active members of Jasper’s First Baptist Church.
In addition to his service on the Jasper City Council, Gates is the immediate past president of Jasper Main Street and a former member of the Jasper Industrial Development Board. He also serves on the Synovus Bank Advisory Board and is a member of the Walker Area Community Foundation’s Grant Review Committee.
On May 23, 2024, Gates became the third Alabamian to summit Mount Everest, an accomplishment that reflects his determination, focus, and perseverance.
As a candidate for mayor, Gates emphasizes the need to:
- Strengthen economic recruitment with diverse pathways to growth
- Support education and workforce development
- Improve quality of life, including outdoor recreation and public spaces
- Foster collaboration across agencies and organizations working toward shared goals
- Ensure fiscal responsibility in city decision-making
