Curry wins second-straight Walker Co. title

The Curry Yellow Jackets battled back from a 4-1 deficit in the title game to beat the Oakman Wildcats, 5-4 and capture their second-consecutive Walker County Softball Tournament Championship on Friday at Curry.

After the Wildcats plated three runs in the first inning and an additional score in the fourth, the Yellow Jackets scored four runs in the fifth inning — first on a two-run triple by Ambrey Taylor that drove-in Alayna Key and Linley Tubbs. On the next at-bat, Kylee Trotter hit a two-run homerun that also sent Taylor across the plate that sealed the victory.

Ella Wright pitched seven innings in the win for Curry, giving up four hits and an earned run, while striking out seven batters.

At the plate, Lanie West went 2 for 3 with a solo homerun, with Brenna Wakefield adding a hit.

Jessy Aston pitched five and two-thirds innings for Oakman, holding Curry to six hits and recording a strikeout.

Offensively for Oakman, Bailey Webb went 2 for 3 with a homerun, a double and four RBIs, Aston had a hit with a run scored and Missy Odom recorded a hit.

The two teams met earlier in the day, with Curry also taking the contest 5-4, with Taylor driving-in Marissa Lawson and Aubrey Lackey in the bottom of the seventh inning in the game-winner.

Members of the All-Tournament Team were Curry: Kylee Trotter, Brenna Wakefield, Ella Reese Wright and Taylor Mancone; Oakman: Missy Odom, Jessy Aston and Jade Bonner; Cordova: Ella Grace Madison and Shelby Black; Carbon Hill: Haleigh Lamon and Raelea Guy and Dora’s Ja’kiyah Womack.
