Orange Beach 10, Curry 2
OXFORD – Top-ranked Orange Beach scored nine runs over the final two innings to break open a close game in the 4A tourney opener Monday at Choccolocco Park. The Makos (43-1) led 1-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth before sending eight batters to the plate. A Curry error resulted in two runs before a two-run home run by K.G. Favors upped the lead to 5-0.
Also winning first-round games in the Class 4A tourney were Cherokee County, Houston Academy and Madison County.
Curry’s Yellow Jackets (38-11-1) plated two runs in the top of the sixth in the opener before Orange Beach scored five in the bottom of the frame to put the game out of reach.
Favors, who also recorded the pitching victory with eight strikeouts, was 2-for-4 with four RBIs for the Makos. Taylor Poland also drove in a run and collected two hits.
Prattville Christian 3, Curry 2
An RBI single by Peyton Thrash scored Saniyah Weaver to score the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to push Prattville Christian to victory and eliminate the Yellow Jackets.
Curry held leads of 1-0 and 2-1 before the Panthers’ final rally. Tied at 2-all, Weaver led off the bottom of the eighth with a single and reached second before scoring on a hit by Thrash. Six different players recorded one hit each for Prattville Christian. Payson Hanson also singled and drove in a run while Laura Beth NeSmith pitched all eight innings to get the win – scattering seven hits and striking out four while yielding a pair of earned runs. Ansley Brown led Curry with a 2-for-4 showing. Ambrey Taylor and Jenna Madison each also drove in a run.
