Carving the path: Looking at Wal-Win runningbacks in 2023

SHARE NOW

Meek’s Cam Deaver had a season few runningbacks dream of in 2022.

The rising senior rushed for 2,300 yards, averaged 209 yards a game and ran for 32 touchdowns. At a 9.7 yards per carry average, he nearly guaranteed a first down each time he got a handoff.

Although there’s no accurate way to predict what Deaver for his final season for the Tigers, he’s sure to provide the Meek faithful plenty to cheer about on game nights in 2023.

While some of the playmakers from last season have graduated, such as Dora’s Jamarcus Goodmon, Sumiton Christian’s Kannen DeFoor and Carbon Hill’s Devon Daniel, expect fireworks from these runningbacks this season.

David Odom, Cordova, Sr.
Odom was a vital component for the Blue Devils’ offense in 2022 and it showed in his numbers. He ran for over 1,100 yards with 12 touchdowns. With the graduation of quarterback Cody Headrick, Odom and his runningmate Jeremy Fullman – who blossomed late last season – will be leaned on to help keep the offense going while a new QB emerges, a job they should do well.

Micah Pledger, Jasper, So.
Pledger caught fire in the second half of the 2022 season with some stellar performances, with good games against playoff teams 6A Homewood and Moody. He ended the regular season with 742 yards and 11 touchdowns and has the potential to be a gamebreaker for the Vikings before his time with the black and gold is up.

Cole Kelly, Lynn, Sr.
The Bears’ offense set a team record of 495 points scored in 2022 and Kelly had an active hand in the success. He ran for over 1,100 yards, scored 20 touchdowns and averaged 6.6 yards a carry. Kelly is one of the several returning stars that make Lynn a team to watch in 2023.

Chris Clemons, Winston Co., Jr.
Like Pledger, Clemons took off in the later half of 2022 and never looked back, running for big games against Lamar County and Falkville, while rushing for over 500 yards during the regular season. Look for Clemons’ playmaking ability to be spotlighted more intensely for his junior year.

Kasen Dickerson, Oakman, Sr.
Dickerson ran for over 500 yards and four touchdowns for the Wildcats in 2022 and will look to help provide Oakman with more offensive options as the young team continues to rebuild.
