The Jasper Board of Education approved the hire of several assistant coaches at Jasper High Monday afternoon.
The names may be familiar to many.
Dusty Goode, who served as head coach at Dora and Mortimer Jordan, has joined the staff at Jasper. Goode stepped down earlier this month at Mortimer Jordan after compiling a 80-41 record over ten seasons — most in school history — and eight playoff appearances.
“I couldn’t be more excited about the knowledge Coach Goode brings to our program,” Jasper head coach David Reeves said. “He’s a great football coach and we are blessed to have him at Jasper.”
Former Viking head coach Shane Smothers was also hired as assistant coach. Smothers served most recently as head coach at Cordova, with head coaching stops at Lawrence County, Georgiana, Walker, W.S. Neal and McKenzie. He also spent several years as an assistant coach at Muscle Shoals and Athens.
“Coach Smothers coached my youngest son at Athens, so I’ve known him a long time. His head coaching experience and wealth of knowledge on the offensive side of the ball brings a lot to the table,” Reeves added.
Former Cordova quarterback and South Alabama tight end Jake Howton was also approved by the board. Howton was previously the offensive coordinator at Mortimer Jordan under Goode.
“Jake is a great, energetic young coach,” Reeves said. “He brings that vibe to the staff that has at a super high level.”
Reeves also added that former Viking player Shawn Mercer has joined the staff during the offseason.
“Shawn has been over the toy bowl program for the past few years. He’s a guy that brings a lot of energy and already has a relationship with many of the players because of his great work in our community,” Reeves said.
“Overall, with these hires, we welcome them all to the Jasper football family. They are going to be a great, great addition.”
Jasper opens the season August 23rd at Brookwood.
