The Jasper Vikings Boys Basketball program is in search of a new head coach following Friday’s announcement of the reassignment Robert Epps into another position within the athletic department after six seasons.
“Coach has been a vital asset to Jasper High School and the young people in our community. He’s helped out with football on Friday night, helped take care of officials, mentored young kids. He’s worked in our alternative school and in-school detention; he’s impacted kids beyond sports,” Jasper principal Jonathan Allen said. “With his presence and his success, he’s done a lot of things that our kids aspire to do. He’s a person of character; you won’t hear anyone say anything negative about him, or him say anything negative towards someone else. we’re extremely happy he is staying within the Jasper High School family and look at new opportunities to impact students.”
Epps replaced Rufus McDuffie at the start of the 2016-17 season after a successful stint at Carbon Hill.
The Vikings in Epps’ six seasons struggled to advance beyond the sub-regional round, with the exception of the 2019-20 campaign where Jasper earned a berth in the Northwest Regional Tournament, making the finals.
Jasper went 10-19 this season, and was eliminated in the sub-regional round of the playoffs by Homewood, 81-36.
Jasper athletic director Johnathan Jordan indicated the search for a new head coach will move quickly and an interim coach will not be named.
