After 78 years, one of the longest-running daily religious radio broadcasts in Alabama and the nation will sign off.
“The Words of Truth” is a daily radio broadcast live from the Sixth Avenue Church of Christ in Jasper.
The popular program started when long-time Congressman and Speaker of the House from Walker County William Bankhead told his friend Pastor Gus Nichols that he planned to start a radio station in Jasper. Pastor Nichols said he wanted his church to be on the station and it has been ever since 1946.
After over 28,000 live broadcasts and 854,000 minutes of preaching His word, the program will discontinue their weekday programming, but will still be on the air during the weekends.
“After much consideration and prayer, our church leadership has made the decision to broadcast the Words of Truth radio program only on Saturdays and Sundays of each week beginning July 1st,” said Levi Sides during a recent program. “We appreciate all of our loyal listeners and want you to continue to listen at 8am each Saturday and Sunday. The program will have the same format, the only change is the program will no be aired throughout the week.”
Brett Elmore said he was saddened by the news, but understood the decision to make a change.
“When I first step foot in the door here, I said the one thing that will never change is the Words of Truth at 8am,” Elmore said. “The program has been a staple in this community for so many years. I really hate to see them discontinue through the week, but understand and respect the decision of the Elders.”
The final weekday program will air at 8am on Friday, July 28th, before making the switch to weekends only.
