Eagles end state run on Tuesday

The Sumiton Christian Eagles return to the AHSAA Class 2A State Tournament lasted for two hotly-contested games on Tuesday, both losses, ending the Eagles’ season and title hopes, but marking a much-improved program that struggled early in the season.

Sumiton Christian lost to Central Region Champion Thorsby, 2-1, in eight innings to begin the tournament, then following a nearly six hour weather delay, lost to Pleasant Valley, 6-4, marking the Eagles’ elimination.

Thorsby 2, Sumiton Christian 1

Bailey Phillips pitched six and two-thirds innings in the opening loss for Sumiton Christian, giving up five hit, two earned runs and a walk, with nine strikeouts. At the plate, Izzy Ingle went 2 for 2, Maddie McCrary drove-in a run on a hit and Annalace Rice scored a run.

Pleasant Valley 6, Sumiton Christian 2

Kalista Cornelison pitched three and two-thirds innings in the eliminating loss, giving up six hits, two earned runs and two walks. Phillips pitched two and one-third innings, giving up two hits and a walk with two strikeouts. Offensively, Emma Potts went 2 for 4 with an RBI, Calli Corley was 2 for 4, Maddie McCrary and Cornelison both had a hti with a run scored and INgle drove-in a run on a hit.
