1938-2021
Nelda Freeman Barton, 82, of Birmingham, passed away peacefully Feb. 20, 2021, with her son at her side.
A native of Jasper, Nelda was a graduate of Curry High School and Walker College. She spent the majority of her career working in the Walker County Probate Office, retiring as Chief Clerk under Judge Rick Allison.
Nelda married the late J. Warren Barton in 1960, and the couple remained happily married for 55 years until his death in 2015. Nelda was the epitome of a public servant, both professionally and personally. She was a longtime member of Farmstead Baptist Church, where she served as treasurer for more than 10 years. She was heavily involved in the Alabama Democratic Party in the 1960s-80s, as well as at the local level, until she and Warren moved to Trussville, Ala., in 2006.
Nelda was strong-willed and resilient, always invested and involved in the lives of those around her. She was a mother figure to many, and her life revolved around her family.
She was active in her community throughout her life, and her heart for others will leave a lasting void.
Nelda was preceded in death by her husband, J. Warren Barton; her parents, Frank and Eula Freeman; and her daughter-in-law, Janis Z. Barton.
She is survived by her son, Douglas W. Barton, of Mountain Brook; her grandson, James D. Barton; and her sister, Maude F. Cheatham, of Madison, MS, nephews, great nephews, great nieces, and her extended family.
Services will be held Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, at 11 a.m. at Collins-Burke Funeral Home in Jasper. Visitation begins at 10 a.m. The family will hold a private burial at Walker Memorial Gardens.
