Williams returns to Dora, bringing excitement and promise

Chavis Williams made a triumphant to his alma mater to usher in the
2021 season to the delight of the students, faculty and community of
Dora.

Having served as head coach of the Carbon Hill Bulldogs in the
previous two seasons where he helped earn its first playoff berth
since 1999.

He takes over a Dora program that saw two games forfeited due to
Covid-19 protocol and still made a first round playoff appearance.

“I thank Dr. Dennis Willingham, our principal Paige Abner, assistant
principal Bart Lockhart and our Walker County School Board member Lee
Ann Headrick for honor and privilege to come back home,” Williams
said. “There’s a great deal of excitement around our program and I
feel we’re off to a pretty good start. Our guys’ energy level is very
high, they come to work every day. There’s still work to be done, but
we’re looking forward to taking the field and playing with full
capacity in the stands.”

The Bulldogs will benefit from two senior starters, TE/LB Jayden
McDavid and WR/DB/P Brennan Davis, both of whom will be expected to
make a big impact.

“The support we’re receiving from the community is big, and two of our
biggest supporters are Coach Williams and Coach Lockhart,” Mc David
said. “That kind of support helps us attack each week with a different
mindset and go out and play.”

Davis stated the absence of forfeits and having to quarantined due to
Covid protocols comes as a big relief.

“We like being out in the community among our supporters and with each
other, that was tough on us last year as we weren’t able to do that,”
Davis said. “Team-building projects and get-togethers are important to
us, without it you don’t get to build the chemistry and camaraderie
necessary to be a good football team.”

The county’s top rusher, Jamarcus Goodman, who ran for 1,288 yards on
176 carries with 10 touchdowns, returns. Senior Boone Martin will
anchor the offensive line, while Sedrick Dixon returns at nose guard on
the defensive line. Ronald Waldrop will line up alongside McDavid at
linebacker and Stanley Staten returns in the secondary with Davis.

Due to forfeits during the 2020 season, the Bulldogs will only host
three home games this season, a Class 4A, Region 6 bout with
Fultondale, along with non-region opponent Holt and the annual rivalry
game against Corner. Dora opens on the road against Cordova in Walker
County’s oldest rivalry, followed by road region contests against
Hanceville, Oneonta, Ashville, Good Hope and Etowah and finish the
year at West Blocton.
