MOBILE – The AHSAA Class 4A/5A Boys’ and Girls’ State Tennis Championships were unable to finish play Friday night at the Mobile Tennis Center. Play will resume Saturday morning at 8 a.m., with five singles finals to be played in the boys’ competition, and four singles and one doubles final to be concluded Saturday in the girls’ competition.
UMS-Wright totaled 76 points to clinch the girls’ state title, and Donoho had 43 points to claim second place. Trophies were awarded to both teams Friday night.
In the boys’ championship race, LAMP had a slight lead with 60 points. Houston Academy had 53 and Jasper had 40 at the end of the night. The boys’ trophies will be presented tomorrow when the final five matches are concluded.
UMS-Wright advanced five players into the singles finals and had all three double teams reach the championship. The Bulldogs’ No. 1 team, Sarah Ladd, and Carol Murray, beat Russellville’s Peyton Parrish and Sofia Tiffin 6-2, 6-1 to win the title.
LAMP’s No. 1 doubles team Edward Lee and Ian Shinn beat Houston Academy’s Mitchell Piedra and Brody Williams, 7-5, 7-5 to claim the state doubles title for 4A/5A.
The Class 7A tourney, which had a smaller field, concluded Friday with Auburn winning the girls’ state championship and Vestavia Hills’ boys repeating as state champions.
Set to battle in the girls’ No. 1 singles finals Saturday are Caroline Johnson of Sardis and UMS-Wright’s Ladd. The boys’ No. 1 finalists are Lamp’s Lee and Houston Academy’s Piedra.
